Election Evaluation Conference

Malawi’s 2009 Parliamentary and Presidential Elections: Democracy in Progress

June 23rd-26th, 2009 - Lilongwe - Cresta Crossroads Hotel

Welcome to the website of the Election Evaluation Conference
Malawi’s Parliamentary and Presidential Elections have taken place on 19th May 2009. To analyse and document the electoral process a four day conference was held from the 23rd to 26th June. Previous experiences prove the necessity of a thorough documentation and of a contribution to the development of the Electoral Commission’s and donor’s knowledge management systems. The conference raised the awareness of major decision makers and facilitated support for the necessary changes that should occur before the next Elections based on the lessons learned from the experiences of the 2009 Elections. The organisers have engaged experienced authors to analyse each of the major aspects of the electoral process. The objective is to provide a well-founded academic assessment and fair interpretation of the 2009 Elections. Each of the authors presented a paper of their findings at this national conference and received feedback from a larger audience on their analysis, interpretations and recommendations. The powerpoint presentation and the recommendations can be downloaded from this website. The final papers will be compiled in an edited book titled “Democracy in Progress” and then distributed to all key stakeholders in Malawi.
